Larry Weiner, Head Storyteller
Why me? For starters: 18 years designing and art directing. I’ve worked with big companies (Starbucks, Microsoft, AT&T, HP) and small ones (TAZO Tea, Iowa Press, Inland-Joseph Apples, UW Medicine). Large format photographer. Photoshop Phreak. Abstract painter. But that's just the toolkit.
The reason I turned my attention to cover design was simple: I published my first novel, "Paradise Rot" and discovered as a writer, I needed to sell my story on the cover - in 12 milliseconds (the minimum amount of time it takes for the human brain to decipher an image). So I used myself as a test case. Come up with a cover that would sell the story, as summed up by a reviewer: "Welcome to tropical paradise. Welcome to The Isle of St. Agrippina. White sandy beaches. Delicious blended drinks. And island cuisine. But beware. All is not as it seems. And you just might wind up on the menu." (five stars) The cover's on the right (along with a few others). My publisher, who agreed to let me design the cover, dug it. It rose to #6 in the Dark Comedy category. 95 reviews. 4 stars. I was able to take a convoluted story (it really is) and give it a single idea - something's rotten in paradise. I've made it perma-free on Amazon. Story suggestions are always welcomed.
