Simple can be scary

So I've been working on this new cover - a literary sort - woman in her 20's POV about a relationship that almost was. The setting is the Great Plains. Two characters working split shifts studying the ecosystem for a college degree. Their method of communication? Magnetic refrigerator letters. The author was going for simple, simple, simple. She also wanted to capture the lush prairie and the odd twilight color of the sky just before it bloomed into "Raging technicolor beauty."

So here's where I'm at so far.

The color palate's been a bit tough to pin down - as well as the color of the letters. The idea being that the letters blend in with the fleeting sky. For this one, I got the chance to break out the acrylics and do some simple washes. Fun!
